Nyctalus azoreum

Nyctalus azoreum

The bat-of-azores (Nyctalus azoreum) is a species of bat in the Vespertilionidae family. Endemic of dry forests of the Azores islands, where it can be found in Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Miguel and Santa Maria. It is assumed that developed from a species of the same gender accidentally introduced in the Azores. Their numbers are threatened by habitat loss caused by humans. It is the only species of bats that hunt by day, probably due to the absence of predators. It shelters in hollow trees, buildings and caves.
