The Garajau cimum weighs on average 136 g and has a wingspan of 79 cm. The breeding adult has a black head and red beak with black tip.

It nests in coastal areas of northern and central Europe. Occurs along the Portuguese coast especially during the migratory passages, there is also a small wintering population.
